DMV Used Car Dealership Practice Test

The correct answer is that a temporary operating copy of the Report of Sale (ROS) is issued to buyers, which is valid until the permanent plates and registration are processed and issued. This temporary permit serves as an official document indicating that the sale of the vehicle has been completed and that the buyer is legally allowed to operate the vehicle while waiting for the official registration and plates. This provision helps to ensure that the buyer can drive the vehicle immediately without facing legal penalties for driving an unregistered vehicle, providing peace of mind during the transition period.

Other options do not accurately reflect the purpose of the temporary documentation issued in this context. A full registration document is generally issued only after all processing is complete, and a one-day operating permit does not meet the requirements for operating a newly acquired vehicle until the permanent registration is finalized. Similarly, a written agreement for the sale of the vehicle is not intended for operational use on the road and does not confer any legal driving privileges. Thus, the temporary operating copy of the ROS is essential in facilitating the legal operation of the vehicle for the buyer during the registration process.
